Introduction

Chemical Peels

Everyone likes to look their best, but it can be frustrating for those struggling with skin imperfections. Even with the multitudes of “home remedies” and treatments available, deciding which one would work best for you can be difficult. While treatments like a facial can perform wonders for your skin, there can be situations where it doesn’t quite do enough and you need to start fresh. At Skin Boutique in Birmingham, MI, we offer Chemical Peels to our Metro Detroit clients as a popular, nonsurgical treatment. To learn more about what we offer and how a Chemical Peel can improve your skin, keep reading below.

What Is a Chemical Peel?

Learn about Chemical Peels

A Chemical Peel is a noninvasive treatment performed on the face which requires a chemical solution to be applied to your skin which removes the top layers, leaving you with a smoother appearance and feel as your new skin heals. Most Chemical Peels come in varying degrees of power: Light, Medium, and Deep. Light and Medium Peels are used to clear up minor skin imperfections and can be performed more than once over time. A Deep Peel is usually required for removing deeper wrinkles, scars, or precancerous growths and should be only performed once. While a deep peel can produce more dramatic results, it does require more recovery time than a light or medium peel.

Types of
Chemical Peels

VI PEEL – The VI Peel® contains a synergistic blend of powerful ingredients suitable for all skin types. This peel provides dramatic results with virtually no pain, no skin preparation, and little downtime. Why wait weeks or months for results? Enjoy radiant, younger-looking skin in about a week with the VI Peel.

VI Peel® Purify – The VI Peel® Purify is the most effective acne treatment available today! It contains the original peel formula plus additional powerful ingredients for superior, consistent results. Benzoyl Peroxide removes bacteria, clears the pores, and increases cell turnover. Includes:

  • Salicylic Acid: causes the cells of the epidermis to shed, opening clogged pores and neutralizing the bacteria within while constricting the pore diameter to prevent further clogging
  • Vitamin C: A powerful antioxidant to remove toxins from the environment Kojic Acid: brightens skin and reduces acne scars.

VI Precision Peel – The VI Precision Peel is a superior booster added to the VI Peel for treating melasma and stubborn hyperpigmentation. Made from the same synergistic blend as the VI Peel but at a higher concentration, this booster provides a peel that is about 25% stronger. (a few more days of ‘social downtime’ may be necessary).

VI Precision Plus Booster – The VI Precision Plus Booster offers the latest breakthrough for age-defying, radiant skin. Key Ingredients:

  • Retinoic Acid triggers peeling and unclog the pores while boosting collagen and elastin. Vitamin C is a powerful antioxidant to mitigate the damaging effects of UV exposure and removes toxins.
  • Hydroquinone bleach inhibits pigmentation and melasma while exfoliating to create a glowing even skin tone.
  • Kojic Acid aids in fighting discoloration and brightens the complexion.
  • Hydrocortisone to soothe and reduce redness. (a few more days of ‘social downtime’ may be necessary).

5-BERRY PIGMENT CONTROL PEEL – 5-Berry Pigment Control Peel combines 5.0% TCA and the reparative, protective, and anti-aging benefits of 5 natural berries—cranberry, raspberry, blueberry, blackberry, and bearberry. These potent antioxidants are abundant with arbutin and ellagic acid—natural tyrosinase inhibitors—that, in combination with licorice extract and ascorbic acid, gently modify and brighten epidermal pigmentary disorders as they increase cell turnover and collagen production. An effective photo-aging/antioxidant therapy to prevent collagen destruction and inflammatory responses associated with environmental influences.

SAL-X SALICYLIC ACID PEEL – Sal-X Salicylic Acid Peel contains a 20% concentration of Salicylic Acid, found naturally in willow bark, wintergreen leaves, and sweet birch bark. It enhances topical penetration of other treatments, oxygenates and detoxifies skin and helps to catalyze metabolic functions, and mitigates damage from free radicals. Provides strong exfoliation and stimulates desquamation resulting in increased cellular turnover and superior all-around peeling for conditions such as acne and surface pigmentation.

VITAMIN A PROFESSIONAL POWER PEEL – Vitamin A Professional Power Peel provides strong exfoliation and comedolysis as it stimulates new collagen production. This new biologically stable combination of 5% active Retinol (Vitamin A), AHAs, and 10% TCA accelerates epidermal cell renewal and protein synthesis improving fine lines and wrinkles as it controls the activation of Matrix Metalloproteinases (MMPs), which destroy collagen and elastin. This exclusive formula is excellent for fading post-inflammatory pigmentation due to photo-aging and acne, restoring healthy tone and texture to the skin.

What to expect?

Chemical Peel Expectations

Your Chemical Peel experience will vary depending on which one you select, so feel free to look at your preferred treatment for a more detailed explanation. The average Chemical Peel involves you making yourself comfortable in one of our reclining chairs. The Skin Care Specialist will then cleanse your face of any dirt or oils.

Then, the Specialist will carefully apply the chemical solution to your skin using a brush or cotton-tipped applicator, which can be adjusted to meet your individual needs. There may be a temporary burning sensation as this formula begins removing the outer dermis layers and improving texture. Finally, a neutralizing solution or wash will be applied to remove the chemical solution from your treated skin.

*On average, a chemical peel will take about 30 minutes but could take as long as 90 minutes depending on the area being treated and which peel you receive.

Recovery

Chemical Peel Recovery

There is downtime or recovery periods involved with our VI Chemical Peel treatments.  We will provide you with very specific instructions to get the best results for your healing skin, which includes avoiding harsh chemicals or prolonged exposure to the sun would be advised.

After 24 hours, you will notice a crust or scab forming that protects your new skin. The scab can usually be removed through gentle washing with soap and water, never picked or pulled off. which should be followed by applying ointments, creams, or non-scented moisturizer. You can expect your new skin to have a deep red appearance (much like a sunburn) which will gradually change into a lighter, more pinkish hue. A few weeks after that you should recognize completely regenerated skin with an even lighter appearance than it was before your treatment. Patients with lighter birthmarks or freckles will notice that they are practically nonexistent.
