Introduction

Sclerotherapy

Varicose veins are caused by weak or damaged valves in the veins, making them twisted and enlarged. It’s a condition that so many people struggle with, but can lead to a lot of self-doubts when visible, and in some patients, even discomfort or pain.  At Skin Boutique in Birmingham, MI, we offer our patients Sclerotherapy as a way to reduce, and eventually erase, the appearance of unsightly veins in as little as two to six treatment sessions!

What is Sclerotherapy?

Learn about Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is a cosmetic procedure considered to be the “Gold Standard” procedure for varicose and spider veins. It uses an FDA-approved chemical solution that is injected directly into a varicose or spider vein. This solution will make the vein walls swell and stick together, sealing them shut and stopping the blood flow, causing the vein to fade over a few weeks with little to no side effects and minimal discomfort.

What are the first
steps of Sclerotherapy?

First Steps

If you would like to find out if Sclerotherapy in Birmingham and Detroit is right for you, the first thing you need to do is schedule your consultation at Skin Boutique. During your consultation, the Skin Care Specialist will perform an allergy test on you, with the solution injected into one of the spider veins. You will need to monitor the area for any adverse reactions for two days before a full treatment is administered. Once the treatment is deemed safe, we will create a treatment plan for you, and if you agree with the plan, our Patient Coordinator will be able to help you schedule your procedure appointment.

Although this treatment can be done any time of the year, most of our clients opt for cooler weather as the support hose tend to be a bit uncomfortable when the weather is warm. You will also need to avoid shaving and use a moisturizer on your legs on the day of your treatment.

What to expect?

Sclerotherapy Expectations

When you come into our boutique Medical Spa for your Sclerotherapy, we will have you lie down on one of our tables and we will have your legs slightly raised or sit comfortably in our reclining chairs if you are having arms or hands worked on. The area being treated will then be cleansed and the Skin Care Specialist will use a small needle to slowly inject the solution into your vein. You may feel a minor stinging or cramping sensation when the needle is in your vein, so if it hurts too much, please let us know. Too much pain is often an indicator that the solution is leaking from the vein into the tissue around it.

After removing the needle, the Specialist will apply pressure to the area and massage it to spread the solution and keep blood out of the vein. Finally, we will tape a pad onto the injection site to keep pressure on the area before moving on to the next vein. The total number of shots is determined by the number of veins being treated.

Treatment sessions typically take 45- 60 minutes.

Recovery

Sclerotherapy Recovery

You can return to your normal activities on the same day but are advised to avoid strenuous exercise for one week after the procedure. You’ll be asked to wear compression stockings for about one week to maintain compression on the treated veins, and you will also want to avoid sun exposure to the treated areas during that time. The inflammation caused by the injections combined with sun exposure can lead to dark spots on your skin, especially if you already have a dark skin tone. It’s very important to adhere to the treatment plan for the best possible result.
